CASA Book Club: My Friends by Fredrik Beckman
Most people don’t even notice them—three tiny figures sitting at the end of a long pier in the corner of one of the most famous paintings in the world. Most people think it’s just a depiction of the sea. But Louisa, an aspiring artist herself, knows otherwise, and she is determined to find out the story of these three enigmatic figures.
Twenty-five years earlier, in a distant seaside town, a group of teenagers find refuge from their bruising home lives by spending long summer days on an abandoned pier, telling silly jokes, sharing secrets, and committing small acts of rebellion. These lost souls find in each other a reason to get up each morning, a reason to dream, a reason to love.
Out of that summer emerges a transcendent work of art, a painting that will unexpectedly be placed into eighteen-year-old Louisa’s care. She embarks on a surprise-filled cross-country journey to learn how the painting came to be and to decide what to do with it. The closer she gets to the painting’s birthplace, the more nervous she becomes about what she’ll find. Louisa is proof that happy endings don’t always take the form we expect in this stunning testament to the transformative, timeless power of friendship and art.

Supporting Your Teen: Addressing Depression and Eating Disorders Together
Deep feelings of sadness and worthlessness often intertwine with a troubled relationship with food and body image. For teens struggling with both depression and eating disorders, the impact on their physical and emotional well-being can be devastating.
Advocates may notice changes in a teen's mood, social interactions, and eating habits but feel unsure about addressing these sensitive topics. Because early intervention leads to better outcomes, it's crucial for advocates to have the knowledge and strategies to help teens find a path to recovery.
Join Families for Depression Awareness and the National Eating Disorders Association for a webinar exploring the complex relationship between depression and eating disorders in teens. Rocio Avila, LCSW-S will discuss how these conditions intersect, share practical strategies for supporting teens, and provide guidance on accessing appropriate treatment resources.

The Weight of the Work: Navigating Grief, Empathy, & Vicarious Trauma
Social service and justice professionals are regularly immersed in the pain and resilience of those they serve - survivors of trauma, abuse, and human trafficking. While empathy is essential to this work, it can also leave caregivers vulnerable to vicarious trauma and emotional exhaustion. This presentation examines how empathy functions as both a bridge and a boundary in high-impact professions. Through story, research, and guided reflection, participants will explore the intersection of grief and empathy, recognize signs of emotional overload, and gain tools to remain present without becoming overwhelmed. Together, we’ll name the weight of the work - and offer ways to carry it with care. Register here.
